RCC Foundation honors outstanding alumna
May 24, 2012
The Rogue Community College Foundation presented its 2012 Alumni of the Year Award to Christine Mallette, executive director of the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance.
Mallette received the award at the RCC Foundation’s 32nd Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, held May 23 at the Grants Pass High School Performing Arts Center. The Foundation awarded $617,000 in scholarships to 450 students for the 2012-13 school year.
A one-time victim of domestic violence, Mallette turned adversity into success by being a survivor. Against the odds, she graduated from RCC with an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree, and went on to attend Southern Oregon University and received degrees in sociology, psychology and journalism.
Her career and professional achievements include being the first domestic violence assistant in the Josephine County District Attorney’s office, founding director of the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance, and two-time co-chair of the Domestic Violence Council. In addition to leadership at the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance, she chairs the Region 5 Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
"Christine’s greatest gift to our community is her tenacity in her efforts to create a safe place for survivors: women, children and men," said Midge Renton, president of the RCC Foundation, who presented the award to Mallette. "She is a true visionary, carries herself with honor and integrity and encourages all those around her to become involved in the movement to end violence and bring a better life to families in our region."
Mallette continues to take classes at RCC for personal enrichment and job training. Having been a scholarship recipient herself, Mallette gives her time as a member of the foundation scholarship committee, donating hours of time reading scholarship applications and helping to determine the winners.
"We feel she embodies the mission of our college with her access, persistence and incredible achievements," Renton concluded.
The alumni award is presented annually in May. For more information on how to nominate an RCC graduate, contact the RCC Foundation at 541-956-7327.
